This is a quotation from Tennyson’s famous poem Morte d’ Arthur where the hero just before his death says to his companion:
The old order changeth yielding place to the new,
And God fulfils Himself in many ways,
Lest one good custom should corrupt the world.
The plain meaning of the beautiful utterance is that change is the order of the universe and, in order that it may not stagnate and rot, the replacement of the old order by the new is essential.
The universe is on flux: nothing is permanent or stable in it. The wheel of time is constantly moving and whatever is new today is found old tomorrow. Change is the nature of the universe childhood changes into youth winter into spring, anger into genial smile. On the stage of the world, scenes follow scenes, acts follow acts, drama follows drama. There is perpetual change; nothing stands still.
But this change is both natural and essential. It is natural because bad things remained in the same condition they would have become stereotyped and stale and would lead to corruption and evils. It is, therefore, essential that there should be change so that the universe may not worsen. God has infinite plans and designs which He works out through these changes and thus satisfies His own desire. Mysterious though His ways may appear to us, we do believe that His purpose is always noble and beneficial for us. And this we experience in the progress of civilization that is constantly working itself through changes. Change is thus the mark or sign of progress.
